Delhi Capitals (DC) suffered an injury scare during their IPL 2026 match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Saturday, with Lungi Ngidi suffering a head injury. Ngidi suffered the injury while trying to catch on the boundary ropes of a Punjab Kings run. He fell backwards and hit the ground with his head. Ngidi was then treated by the medical team and taken to hospital by ambulance.
Delhi Capitals later confirmed that the South African pacer was stable and would be released from the hospital soon.
However, Delhi Capitals replaced Lungi Ngidi, the pacer, with spinner Vipraj Nigam as a concussion replacement.
Why Vipraj Nigam replaces Lungi Ngidi as concussion replacement
The simple reason why Vipraj Nigam, and not Sri Lanka’s Dushmanth Chameer, replaced Lungi Ngidi as a concussion replacement is the overseas player rules.
As per IPL rules, a team cannot name more than four overseas players in the playing eleven and if Ngidi replaces Chameer, the Sri Lankan would be the team’s fifth player in the playing eleven. Apart from Ngidi, DC had Pathum Nissanko, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs in the playing XI. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra explained the reasons in detail.
“Lungi Ngidi was hit on the head while trying to catch, it was actually a very horrific incident. I wish him a speedy recovery. But the concussion substitute who replaced him was Vipraj Nigam and not Dushmantha Chameera.”
“You would ask why, because if an overseas fast bowler gets injured, why doesn’t another overseas player replace him? Skill-wise, he (Chameera) is the right choice. In fact, he is the right choice also from the point of view of nationality. But there is a tactical problem. You know what, if you say three overseas players in the playing eleven, it would be a foreign player,” Aaktash would be a substitute. in a video uploaded to his ‘X’ account.
“However, if you put four overseas players in the starting XI and if one of the overseas players gets injured due to concussion, then you cannot have an overseas replacement. The rule is very, very clear that you would be playing with five overseas players if you replaced a foreign concussed player with another foreign player,” he added.

However, Vipraj Nigam was not a similar replacement for Lungi Ngidi. Vipraj is a spinner while Ngidi is a pacer. And with Auqib Nabi coming in as a stand-in for Pathum Nissanko, Vipraj was DC’s only bowling option to replace the South African.
“Now, why Vipraj Nigam? Vipraj Nigam is a leg-spinner and Lungi Ngidi is a fast bowler and you would think it’s tactically wrong. As it is, Vipraj hasn’t done so well in this tournament so far.”
“However, the fact is that there was only one fast bowler among the impact player substitutes, Dushmanth Chameer. Apart from him, there were two other players as batsmen and there was only one Indian bowler, Vipraj Nigam. So you don’t really have a choice in this case,” he explained.

What do the rules say?
According to rule 1.2.6 of the IPL playing conditions, “A team cannot have more than 4 overseas players on the field during any match. Therefore, if a team lists a maximum of 4 overseas players in its starting eleven, the overseas player can only take the field as a substitute fielder if the player he is replacing is an overseas player.”

“If a team lists less than 4 overseas players in its starting eleven, the overseas players may only enter the field of play as substitutes in the field, failing which the total number of overseas players representing that team on the field shall not exceed 4.”
Delhi Capitals, after being asked to bat, posted 264/2 in 20 overs on the back of an unbeaten 152 from KL Rahul and a knock of 91 from Nitish Rana. However, the Axar Patel-led side could not defend that total as Prabhsimran Singh (76) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (71*) guided Punjab Kings to a remarkable six-wicket win, completing the record chase.
