Karnataka: Ridge gates of Tunga reservoir raised to release excess water

As many as 10 of the 22 ridge gates of the Tunga reservoir at Gajanur near Shivamogga were lifted on Sunday (July 5, 2026) to release excess water. The heavy inflow caused by the rain in the catchment prompted the Tunga project officers to open the gates.
As on Sunday (07/05/2026) morning, the inflow into the reservoir, which has a gross storage capacity of 3.24 TMC, was 20,565 cusecs, of which 18,051 cusecs was released downstream into the river. Officers began lifting the sluice gates on Saturday night, opening two sluice gates at 6 p.m. and gradually increasing the number to 10 by Sunday afternoon to handle the excess flow.

The water level was 588.18 m, against the full reservoir level of 588.24 m. Against the gross capacity of 3.24 TMC, the gross storage was 3.206 TMC. Last year on this day, the level was 587.57 m, gross storage 2.854 TMC, inflow 46,042 cusec and outflow 38,345 cusec.
