Mumbai Rains: City remains on red alert

The Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) railway station in Kurla experienced waterlogging on Saturday (July 4, 2026). Meanwhile, rains continued to lash Mumbai, Thane and Pune on Sunday (July 5, 2026) morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that the rain did not bring immediate relief. In its announcement on July 4, 2026 at 7 pm, it placed Mumbai and Thane on red alert and Konkan region and Pune under orange alert.

Konkan region and Ghat areas of Pune district are expected to experience very heavy and persistent rainfall with risk of minor landslides while yellow alert is in effect in Pune.

Minister of State for Disaster Management Girish Mahajan has urged citizens not to step out of their homes unless it is urgent. He said rescue teams have been deployed to help the public affected by the heavy rains and traffic is being cleared off the roads.

“More than 200 mm of rain fell in 12 hours which is very heavy rain – I mean for Mumbai it is very heavy rain. I would like to request all the tourists and those who are going for a tour. NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed. Our teams are deployed near the manholes. Traffic is being eased. People are coming out, sitting near the high tide as most of the accidents are just witnessing the high tide. the house if it is urgent work,”

As a result of the rain, there were many accidents and injuries.

The intense monsoon showers have already caused widespread civil chaos and traffic disruption across the city, along with a tragic toll in the suburbs. An earlier period of heavy rain caused several trees to fall across the western suburbs, blocking several key roads. The rain also came at a tragic cost this monsoon season. An 11-year-old student died and several others were injured when a tree fell on a school bus in Chembur during an earlier spell of heavy rain and strong winds. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde also appealed to the citizens roaming along the seashore in Worli area who ignored the directions and warnings issued by the corporation and the police to leave the area as they were seen loitering by the sea and sitting on window sills here and there.
