Farming activity has picked up in Vizianagaram district with incessant rains for the past three days

Incessant rains have provided much-needed relief to farmers of Vizianagaram district, which witnessed a dry spell in June 2026. Farming activity has been brisk in all mandals of the district with decent rainfall in recent days. Many mandals like Vizianagaram, Gantyada, Gajapathinagaram, Denkada, Bhogapuram and others have received more than 30 mm of rainfall in recent days.

Initially, the agriculture ministry feared that the crop area would decrease by around 20,000 hectares in the ongoing Kharif season with the impact of EL Nino. Normally, 1.21 lakh hectares of rice fields were cultivated every year and the estimated area of the crop was around 1.03 lakh hectares. The expected area of maize harvest this year is around 10,200 hectares. It’s almost the same thing that corn doesn’t require a lot of water like paddy crops.
Speaking to The Hindu, Vizianagaram District Agriculture VTRmarao expressed happiness over the improvement in rainfall across the district. He said the crop area is expected to be more than earlier projections due to heavy rainfall in several mandals in the district. He said that the government has taken adequate steps to supply sufficient quantity of fertilizers in all areas of the district.
With continuous rains in the basins, several reservoirs like Thotapalli, Madduvalasa, Thatipudi and others have been receiving huge waters for the last few days. Recently, the irrigation department released water from Thatipudi reservoir to irrigate nearly 15,300 acres of land in S.Kota and Gajapathinagaram constituencies.
