Government issues notice to Meta over Instagram ads promoting child sexual abuse content: Report | Today’s news
The Indian government has issued a strong notice to Meta over the occurrence of paid ads on Instagram that allegedly promoted child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEAM) material, according to a PTI report.
A report citing sources said that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued a notice to the social media giant on Saturday while demanding a detailed explanation within 7 days.
“MeitY has ordered Instagram to ban all ads and content promoting and facilitating access to CSEAM,” the report quoted a source as saying.
An earlier PTI report also noted that MeitY was also officially summoned by MeitY recently over CSEAM’s dispute with the ministry, which sought an explanation from the US tech giant.
Notably, this was the second time this week that Meta officials were subpoenaed by MeitY. An earlier report by ANI noted that MeitY officials had earlier had representatives of Meta to discuss the Centre’s notification regarding WhatsApp’s proposed username feature.
The company has reportedly been given three days to give a detailed explanation on the matter.
