VO Chidambaranar port, fishing port, salt pans, industries and power plants together define the Thoothukudi constituency, popularly known as the Pearl City.
The constituency, which has alternated between the DMK and AIADMK since 1967, has seen significant upgrading of civic amenities in recent years, including potable water, a multi-specialty hospital and stormwater drains.
