When you think of Mumbai Indians bowling, names like Jasprit Bumrah usually dominate the conversation. Ashwani Kumar might have been a household name on the lips of fans and possibly Hardik Pandya too, given that the left-arm pacer was benched for the first five matches of the season. After MI slumped to the bottom of the table with four losses, Ashwini’s inclusion proved to be a crucial factor in the context of the game.
On his season debut at the Narendra Modi Stadium, a venue that turned out to be a bogey for Mumbai, Ashwani dismantled Gujarat Titans with a stunning 4-24. His performance ensured that Mumbai have maintained an almost flawless record of defending over 200 targetsnow winning 19 out of 20 such cases.

Despite the high pressure of the must-win environment, Ashwani remained unfazed by the unpredictable Ahmedabad surface.
“It’s a black pitch, so we expected the ball to stay low. From the first delivery, we saw some uneven movement,” Ashwini remarked during the post-match press conference.
Rather than sticking to a rigid pre-game script, Ashwani emphasized the importance of real-time adaptation. “Before, we studied the batsmen, but once we got on the pitch, we realized we had to adapt to what the pitch required. Success came from adapting to the conditions.”
Ravi Shastri dropped the strike;
He said: Rohit Sharma spotted Ashwani Kumar during his days in the Mumbai Indians camp!! He really worked hard on him and finally it paid off for him and his idol, Rohit Sharma will be very happy for him today

Ashwani’s haul was no fluke; he systematically removed GT’s dangerous middle order, including Shubman Gill, Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan and Rashid Khan. His strategy relied heavily on aggressive lengths and constant communication with the skipper.
“As soon as I got in there, I saw that bowling heavy lengths and delivering back lengths was working, so I supported that plan,” explained Ashwani. When asked about his frequent use of the short ball, he credited the tactical synergy with Hardik Pandya: “We planned to take wickets and after discussing with Hardik we executed accordingly.”
PREPARATION IN THE SHADOW
For a player who spent the first three weeks of the tournament on the sidelines, Ashwani’s pace was remarkably sharp. He revealed that his time on the bench was spent honing specific skills and finding mental balance.
“I was working on my yorkers and swings in the nets. I was just waiting for my chance and staying ready,” he added, revealing that he spent that time visiting the temple to stay grounded and wait for his opportunity.
Combined with Tilak Varma’s historic 45-ball century, Ashwani’s four catapulted Mumbai Indians from 10th to 7th in the points table. It was a performance that reflected his sensational IPL debut against KKR last year, proving that he thrives when the stakes are highest.
Mumbai Indians will now take this newfound momentum back home as they prepare to host Chennai Super Kings in a high-profile encounter at the Wankhede Stadium on April 23.
