Celebrity chef Vikas Khanna has revealed plans to carry out a spiritual project inspired by the Jagannath Rath Yatra. In an Instagram post, Khanna said he intends to build the car himself, starting with raw wood and finishing it as an offering.
The chef described the idea as one that came to him in a dream, sharing a rough visual concept created using artificial intelligence and outlining the process he plans to follow. “I will build this car myself – from the first piece of wood to its final sacrifice,” he wrote.
Khanna said the work will begin on Akshaya Tritiya, which falls on April 19 in 2026. The day has special significance in Hindu traditions and is also associated with the ceremonial start of chariot construction in Puri for the annual Rath Yatra.
Referring to tradition, Khanna noted that on this day the logs are blessed and consecrated before construction begins. He described his initiative as “a beginning rooted in faith, devotion and dedication”, adding that the day is believed to bring lasting prosperity.
The announcement comes days after Vikas Khanna was named in the TIME100 2026, a list that recognizes influential people across fields.
Reacting to the honour, Khanna expressed his gratitude and said the recognition reflected not only his journey but also the global rise of Indian cuisine. Speaking to ANI, he said that the success belongs to all those who have supported him over the years.
“I feel more with all the people who have stood by me all these decades. It’s a big achievement for both our Indian culture and cuisine,” he said, adding that such recognition helps amplify the global voice of Indian food.
In a separate statement, Khanna described his inclusion on the TIME100 list as a proud moment and credited his family for their role in his journey.
He said the honor represents years of consistency and dedication, while highlighting the growing global recognition of India’s culinary traditions. “This achievement is a victory for India and our culinary heritage,” he said.
Khanna added that he hoped the recognition would inspire others to pursue their ambitions and represent India at the international level.
