The Union Government Delimitation Act is an attempt at gerrymandering to gain an upper hand in future elections, Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) Central Committee member TMThomas Isaac said. “Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seems to have forgotten to announce the women’s reservation bill passed in 2023. The bill was finally announced last night. No one is against it. The BJP’s objective is not women’s reservation but to ensure victory in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. For this, the Election Commission (SIR) is fully under its control by the SIR, which is being used to conduct special review communities. The Delimitation Commission will similarly be used to redraw the boundaries of parliamentary seats at BJP’s whim, the larger the number of parliamentary seats, the easier it is to commit fraud,” Mr. Isaac wrote in his Facebook post.
The BJP, he said, had changed tack, recognizing that the delimitation bill, which proposed a 77% increase in the representation of North Indian Hindi-speaking states and only a 33% increase in the representation of South Indian states, would not secure the required two-thirds majority in Parliament. “Amit Shah said that the law may stipulate that representation will be increased by 50 percent in all states. Currently, the constitution allocates parliamentary seats to states in proportion to their population in 1971. A two-thirds majority is required for change. Neither Amit Shah nor the BJP is ready to guarantee that an increase in the existing seats will be done by changing the 5 and 0 percent. The proportional system today requires a two-thirds majority, but in the future it will not be enough a mere majority, cannot be left at the mercy of the BJP.
