The Supreme Court’s decision to allow individuals whose appeals against exclusion from the electoral roll are allowed by the appellate courts to vote in the West Bengal polls has offered fresh hope to thousands of voters who were excluded from the state’s electoral roll during the adjudication process that followed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
About 27 lakh voters out of a list of 60 lakh voters whose eligibility was assessed by judicial officers were struck off the electoral rolls, taking the total number of omitted voters in the state to over 90 lakh. West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee was the first to react and said she was very happy with the development.
