Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) complained to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about the song selection and DJ commentary during their match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on the 5th, according to a report in The Indian Express. In the complaint, CSK said it was not “in good taste” to play the song “Dosa, idli, sambar, chutney, chutney” during the match. The song is often used in memes associated with South Indian stereotypes. According to the report, CSK said the song contained references like “dosa, idli, sambar, chutney”, which the franchise felt was stereotypical and mocked their Tamil Nadu identity. The issue comes at a time when the rivalry between the two teams has intensified and RCB have won four matches in a row against CSK. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told The Indian Express: “DJs are usually around to support the home team. But it was different at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.”
History of Tit-for-Tat with “Dosa, idli, sambar, chutney, chutney”
The issue dates back to an incident in 2025 involving RCB’s Jitesh Sharma. He was mocked by a Chennai DJ after a video of him singing the same song went viral.A video shared before the match showed RCB players being asked what came to mind when they thought of Chennai. While most gave generic answers, Jitesh sang “Dosa, Idly, Sambar, Chutney Chutney”, which some CSK fans saw as a stereotype of South Indian culture. CSK said they took action after the episode and put in place rules to keep their staff neutral and respectful. “After that incident, it never happened again. DJ should not make any comments about opponents. Also, we are lucky to have a beautiful fan base to cheer us on in numbers,” Viswanathan said, as quoted by The Indian Express.
