The government, sources said, has approached several opposition leaders and sought their views on tabling an amendment to speed up the timetable for implementation of the Constitution (One Hundred Sixth Amendment) or Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Bill, which seeks to allocate 33% seats to directly elected legislatures, including the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies for women.
The legislation, more commonly known as the Women’s Reservation Act, 2023, was passed by Parliament in a special session, the first in the new Parliament House, on 21 September 2023. The Lok Sabha passed the bill by 454 votes to two. The Rajya Sabha passed the bill unanimously, with 214 votes in favor and none against.
