MUMBAI: More than a year after recovering from a urinary tract infection, Vinod Kambli continues to struggle with health problems even as his condition has not worsened. However, the former Indian batsman is still not out of danger.“Since he was hospitalized in Thane about 18 months ago, Kambli has had a clot in his brain. He has a bad memory. He remembers things and then forgets them. All because of that clot in his brain. Kambli has stopped drinking but he tends to smoke now and then. Smoking is completely forbidden for him as it puts him at risk of stroke (perfector Chagladila), who has been monitored for stroke (perfector Chaglaous, Kambli treatment,” his close friend and former first-class umpire Marcus Couto told TOI on Wednesday.

He thinks they are offering smoking to the former Indian cricket star. But smoking is extremely harmful to him, especially to his brain,” Couto added. There have also been some positive signs. “10 days ago, he acted in a commercial – after a long, long time – for Dinshaw’s ice cream. It was shot at the Mahim Juvenile Cricket Ground Shivaji Park. They gave him a role that suited him. Along with his brother Ricky and former cricketer Viram Dayal, we visited Kambli at his Jewel Cooperative Society residence last week.” “He seemed to be in good health. He and his family were in good spirits. Kambli now uses a stick to walk. His son (Cristiano) wants to become a cricketer. I asked Jatin Paranjape to enroll him in his cricket academy and he immediately agreed. Of course, Jatin will not charge Kambli’s son.”Kambli caused concern during a public appearance in December 2024 where he appeared unsteady alongside Sachin Tendulkar. Cricket greats like Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev later supported his rehabilitation.Despite efforts, including a proposed rehabilitation plan promoted by members of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, long-term recovery remains a challenge.
