The Bengali identity was in full display West Bengal bound for polls on Poila Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, on Wednesday (April 15, 2026) when candidates across political parties campaigned with fish as a sign of cultural affiliation ahead of the assembly elections.
In Kolkata, Trinamool Congress leader and Tollygunge candidate Aroop Biswas campaigned with a fish in hand. A similar campaign was launched by Kaustav Bagchi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Barrackpore, who went door-to-door greeting residents with a fish hanging from his hand.
