Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann resigns days after shock World Cup exit, former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp tipped to succeed

Julian Nagelsmann, Jurgen Klopp Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as Germany head coach following the team’s shock World Cup exit, ending his tenure less than three years after taking charge. The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed Nagelsmann’s resignation on Friday, four days after Germany were knocked out by Paraguay in the round of 32 following a 1-1 draw and penalty shoot-out.The result meant Germany’s third consecutive World Cup campaign ended before the last eight. His resignation came after negotiations with the federation. Nagelsmann has previously indicated his intention to stay despite having two years left on his contract, which has reportedly made him one of the highest-paid coaches at the World Cup.His future came under scrutiny during the tournament with criticism of his tactics and team selection.Germany’s defeat to Paraguay was also their first ever penalty shootout loss at a FIFA World Cup. The result denied them progress to the round of 16, where they would face France.Germany finished top of their group after wins over Curacao and Ivory Coast. However, they looked unconvincing in their final group stage defeat to Ecuador.Nagelsmann also faced questions over his decision to bring veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer back into the starting line-up and over the regular use of Joshua Kimmich at right-back instead of his preferred midfield role.Nagelsmann was appointed coach of Germany in September 2023. Prior to this World Cup campaign, he also led the team to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp is among the frontrunners to replace him, according to reports.
