Residents of a remote village in Tripura staged a protest and blocked the road after an elderly woman was killed by an elephant before dawn on Saturday (April 4, 2026). The police administration, which was extremely busy due to the upcoming Tribal Autonomous District Council elections, found it difficult to contain the situation.
An elderly tribal woman was trampled to death by a tusker in Ramkrishnapur village of Khowai district, police said. An elephant broke into a house made of bamboo to attack a family.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who campaigned for the party’s candidate in the district assembly elections, visited the bereaved family and met the villagers. He expressed his condolences and assured the family of support.
Hundreds of protesters initially raised a ruckus at the Mungiakami police station and the local forest department, demanding that the government take measures to prevent frequent raids by wild elephants. A forest guard and others were attacked with bricks and sticks but were rescued by security forces.
The agitation ended after the intervention of senior police and district officials.
This was the second such incident in the last one-and-a-half months after a man was killed in Chakmaghat area, also in Khowai district. During a recent assembly session, the Tripura government said that an ambitious plan to create an elephant corridor in the hills to prevent elephant raids on villages is being implemented.
