A team of neurosurgeons from Gleneagles Hospital in Chennai successfully removed a rare and complex tumor located in a critical area of the brain of a 30-year-old man diagnosed with a rare and newly recognized aggressive brain tumor classified by the World Health Organization in 2021.
It was placed deep in a critical and surgically challenging area of the brain, very close to the brainstem and major blood vessels. A team of doctors led by Nigel Symss, senior consultant neurosurgeon, and Venkatesan Sanjeevi, senior consultant neurosurgeon, performed a two-stage surgery that lasted approximately eight hours and successfully removed the tumor without any complications.
The first procedure involved an emergency ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VP shunt) to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the brain to alleviate the life-threatening complications of hydrocephalus. This was followed by a second operation via a supracerebellar infratentorial approach allowing safe access to the deep-seated tumor. With the help of advanced neurosurgical instruments, the team achieved almost complete removal of the tumor without any complications. The patient had relief from his symptoms, relaxation was added.
