Republic Day is celebrated in India every year on 26 January to mark the day the Constitution of India came into force in 1950, replacing the Government of India Act (1935).
The day is observed with great pride and patriotism across the country, with a grand Republic Day parade in New Delhi showcasing India’s cultural diversity and military might.
India will mark its 77th Republic Day on Monday and the celebrations will begin with the iconic Republic Day Parade at the Kartavya Trail near India Gate in New Delhi. Thousands of people from all over the country participate in the event.
This year, President Draupadi Murmu will hoist the national flag. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay a wreath at the National War Memorial to begin the ceremony. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, António Costa, will also attend the event as chief guests.
