American golf legend Tiger Woods said on Tuesday that he will take a period of time away from the sport to focus on his health, days after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a car crash in Florida.
Woods, a 15-time major champion, was involved in a rollover accident near his Jupiter Island home last week. A 50-year-old man was taken into custody and later released on bail. No injuries were reported in the incident.

In a statement posted on social media, Woods said he understands the seriousness of the situation and will take time to resolve it.
“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am leaving for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health,” Woods said.
“It is necessary to prioritize my well-being and work towards a permanent recovery.”
Court documents filed Tuesday showed Woods pleaded not guilty to the DUI charge and requested a mistrial. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 5, although he is not required to appear in court.
Details from the investigative report indicate Woods told authorities he was looking at his phone and adjusting the radio at the time of the crash, not noticing the slowing vehicle in front of him. Officers at the scene observed signs of impairment, with the report saying Woods appeared lethargic and unsteady.
Authorities also said he was found to be in possession of prescription drugs and that he admitted to using the drugs earlier in the day.
The development comes as Woods only recently returned to competitive golf after a lengthy layoff due to injury. Last week he featured in the TGL Finals, a format that requires significantly less physical effort compared to regular tours.
Woods was targeting a comeback at the upcoming Masters, which was set to begin next week at Augusta National Golf Club. However, following his announcement, the club confirmed that the five-time champion would not be present at the event in any capacity.
“Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being,” chairman Fred Ridley said in a statement.
Woods added that he remains committed to returning to a “healthier, stronger and more focused place,” while requesting privacy as he deals with the situation.
