The capital of Indian football, Kolkata, is dressing up for the knockout stages of the World Cup
Whenever the opening beats of “Waka Waka” or “Wavin’ Flag” play, soccer fans around the world instantly know what time it is: World Cup time. For one month, the biggest spectacle in sports took over televisions, streets, cafes and living rooms around the world.
The World Cup is more than just a tournament. It is a celebration of skill, culture, national pride and unforgettable drama. Whether fans root for Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal, admire Spain’s famous tiki-taka style or support Lionel Messi and Argentina’s ferocious pressing game, the excitement is universal. Each match brings hope, tension and moments that can define a nation’s football history.
World Cup fever is very much alive in India and nowhere is it felt more deeply than in Kolkata. Known for its passionate sports culture, Kolkata transforms itself during major football tournaments. The streets of the city are often decorated with flags, banners and posters, while fans proudly show their support for their favorite teams. We visited ‘The Ganapati Seva Dal’, a local neighborhood club in Fariapukur, Shyambazar, Kolkata, known for transforming its narrow lanes into a vibrant ‘FIFA Gali’ for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Club members hand painted colorful murals, flags and massive cutouts of football legends like Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar to celebrate the tournament.
The main reason for Kolkata’s special association with the World Cup is its loyal fan base. The city has long been home to some of the most dedicated football fans in the country. While many fans identify with Brazil or Argentina, the love of soccer transcends national borders. In Kolkata, people celebrate the art of the game itself – the flair, creativity, goals and unforgettable players that make the tournament magical. The appeal of stars like Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar adds even more excitement. Their presence attracts millions of viewers, especially young fans who see them as symbols of perfection and inspiration. As these legends enter the world stage, supporters in Kolkata remain glued to their screens waiting for moments of brilliance.
The FIFA World Cup is a reminder of football’s unique ability to unite people across continents. In Kolkata, this connection shines particularly brightly, turning the city into one of the most passionate football hubs in the world during the tournament.
Not only this, the organizers also give a special message to the Indian football team, “One day we will also play in the mega football world cup.”
