Kolkata Knight Riders are staring at a tricky selection call ahead of the start of IPL 2026 against Mumbai Indians on March 29, with their opening combination still undecided. Former India batsman Aakash Chopra believes the decision could soon affect KKR’s campaign.
KKR’s struggles at the top last season made this call all the more important. Despite Ajinkya Rahane finishing as their leading run-scorer and Sunil Narine being among their most impressive batsmen, the team failed to find a consistent opening pair and finished without more than fifty stands in IPL 2025. the side is gearing up to open their IPL 2026 season against MIwho have a tremendous bowling attack.

Chopra pointed out that KKR may be forced into a tight combination from the first game, especially with an overseas balance that includes Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, while Cameron Green should be at No.3.
“What you are doing today, you will have to do for at least four or five matches. I hope they will think about Sunil Narine, but they won’t be able to think about him because they have to play Finn Allen and open Ajinkya Rahane,” Chopra said.
“If they have to open both of them, when Sunil Narine comes in and if Ajju doesn’t open, his figure would be half that. That’s one big question they have to answer. After that, what is the right number for Cameron Green? I think three is the right number for him. Let him bat there,” he added.
WHO WILL OPEN KKR IN MI CLASH?
The dilemma is not only about form, but also about team balance. If KKR opt for Allen or Seifert as the overseas opener, it will affect the number of overseas slots available for the rest of the XI.
Seifert offers goal stability while Allen provides explosive intent up top. Alternatively, KKR could rely on an Indian wicketkeeper such as Angkrish Raghuvanshi, allowing for more flexibility in overseas selection.
Narine remains a strong option at the top given his past achievements, but housing him alongside Rahane and the overseas opener creates a selection headache.
With KKR coming off a disappointing season, getting the opening combination right isn’t just about strategy, it’s about setting the tone for IPL 2026. As Chopra suggested, the call they make now could define their approach for the next few matches.
