Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru have a great opportunity to end Lucknow Super Giants’ fading playoff hopes when the two teams meet at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Thursday.
As the play-off match enters its crucial phase, RCB will know that there is little room to relax now. Big win for SRH over PBKS May 6 and the playoff schedule announced on Wednesday only raised the stakes, with the winner of Qualifier 1 enjoying a crucial break before the final.
This makes every point even more valuable, especially for a side like RCB who remain firmly in the hunt. Against an LSG side struggling for consistency and on the brink of relegation, Bengaluru have a chance to not only strengthen their own position but also deal a major blow to their direct rivals.
CAN RCB TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEIR INTERRUPTION?
Royal Challengers Bengaluru head into Thursday’s clash with a valuable advantage as they enjoyed a week’s break before taking on Lucknow Super Giants.
At this stage of the tournament, that gap could prove crucial. With teams juggling travel, fatigue and mounting pressure, RCB had the rare luxury of time to reset, recover and regroup after their defeat to Gujarat Titans.
The break should allow Bengaluru to sort out the issues that led to their batting collapse in Ahmedabad, while giving key players time to recharge ahead of a critical stretch in the play-off race.
It could also prove particularly useful for players carrying minor niggles, with RCB likely to use the extra time to recover from a busy run of matches.
Against the outgoing LSG side another crushing defeat and still looking for answers, RCB will know it’s a chance to bat with fresher legs and a clearer mind.
With the playoff race tightening, Bengaluru cannot afford to let this advantage go to waste.
CAN LSG APPEAR?
Lucknow Super Giants head into another must-win game still looking for clarity, especially with the bat.
Since Josh Inglis returned to the side, LSG have relied heavily on their overseas batting core, but the constant reshuffle has only added to the uncertainty. Inglis was pushed up to open, Nicholas Pooran was moved back to No.3 and the middle order continued to shift around them, leaving the batting unit without much stability.
This ambiguity was reflected in their results.
While Pooran returns to form with a much needed fifty offered some encouragement, LSG now face a key decision. The franchise will be tempted to stick with him at No. 3 after the inning helped stop his slump, but that could again force changes elsewhere in the order.
The bigger question is whether LSG will stick with this new combination or return to a more settled structure from earlier in the season.
They cannot afford another tactical reset at this stage of the tournament.
LSG vs RCB: TEAM NEWS
Phil Salt is expected to be sidelined with injury. The onus remains on Virat Kohli and Jacob Bethell to ensure the explosive launch.
LUCKNOW: PITCH AND WEATHER
Lucknow has been one of the most challenging venues for batting in IPL 2026, with the Ekana Stadium producing the lowest-scoring matches of the season so far and an average first innings total of around 155.
Although the square boundaries are relatively short, roughly 56 to 64 meters, the long straight boundary, which stretches for almost 77 meters, makes the net impact on the ground much more challenging.
The pitch is expected to test the batsmen again. It looks dry on the surface, has very little grass and can offer uneven bounce throughout the match. There is also likely to be some help for the slower balls and spin later in the evening, especially after a hot day in Lucknow.
Even so, the surface is firm underneath, which should allow the ball to hit the bat nicely in the early stages and reward positive strokeplay in the powerplay. The chasing teams have enjoyed a clear upper hand at this venue, winning 12 of their last 15 matches, which makes the draw particularly important. A score in the 170 range should be considered competitive.
According to the weather forecast. Expect temperatures to range between the high twenties and low thirties. In the afternoon, however, there is a 40 percent chance of rain with the possibility of thunderstorms. If this persists, we can expect a game reduction.
