When you think of Kolkata Knight Riders, they may not always be mentioned in the same breath as Chennai Super Kings or Mumbai Indians. However, KKR’s record tells a different story. With three IPL titles, they are among the most successful teams in the league, behind joint record holders MI and CSK.
KKR have often thrived as underdogs who deliver when expectations are low. They were not favorites against CSK in Chepauk in 2012 but stunned the home crowd to lift the trophy. Two years later, despite the Punjab Kings entering the final as favourites, KKR rose to the occasion again. In 2024, even as Sunrisers Hyderabad grabbed the limelight, KKR quietly went about their business and secured yet another title.

In IPL 2026, they will focus on a similar story scenario.
However, their title defense in 2025 failed and an eighth place finish revealed the need for a change. A shake-up followed, with Abhishek Nayar taking charge as head coach, backed by a star-studded staff that included Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russell, Shane Watson and Tim Southee.
KKR went into the auction with a strong purse, arguably the biggest in the franchise’s history, thanks to the release of last season’s big-money buy, Venkatesh Iyer, and Russell. The foreign contingent was essentially rebuilt with Rs. 25.2 crore will be spent on Cameron Green and another Rs. 18 crores was splashed on Matheesh Pathiran. Since losing Phil Salt during the 2025 auction, they’ve been looking for an explosive goaltender at the top and went on to acquire two in Finn Allen and Tim Seifert.
Tejasvi Singh and Sarthak Ranjan brought the Delhi Premier League swag to the side and made shrewd acquisitions in the form of home-grown pacers, with Karthik Tyagi and Akash Deep stepping in. Only a few targets were missing in Calcutta, but the main ones were all landed and more added to the squad depth.
So the question remains the same. Can KKR repeat what they did recently in 2024 to make their fans happy?
KKR FORCES
KKR’s biggest strength is in their batting. The opening pair was overhauled with the arrival of Allen and Seifert, especially after their performances in the T20 World Cup 2026. The pair were one of the main reasons New Zealand reached the final, with Seifert scoring 326 runs and Allen 298.
Green is expected to add more steel to the top order which will also feature Ajinkya Rahane and youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Raghuvanshi looks set for a breakthrough season, scoring a hundred in the first practice match and is also tipped to don the wicketkeeping gloves.
Rinku Singh has been named as vice-captain and is expected to start at No. 5. Ramandeep Singh will finish and get support from Anukul Roy, who had a sensational 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign.
Add to that Rovman Powell, Rachin Ravindra, Manish Pandey, Rahul Tripathi and the DPL duo of Ranjan and Tejasvi and you have a batting line-up that will be the envy of everyone.
Rotation
KKR’S WEAKNESSES
Let’s start with the obvious here. If you are a KKR fan right now, you will be on social media hoping and praying that all the players are safe and injury free. KKR lost Harshit Rana, Akash Deep and Matheesha Pathiran to injury.
Pathirana is expected to join the team sometime in April but his NOC from Sri Lanka cricket is still awaited. All these injuries mean that KKR will go into their first match against Mumbai Indians on March 29 with Vaibhav Arora leading their pace attack. Adding to that the whole Mustafizur Rahman fiasco, KKR found themselves on the wrong end of a deal that cost them more than nine crores.
Umran Malik has been out of the limelight since 2024 and his form seems to have dropped significantly if the first practice match and his outings in the DY Patil tournament are anything to go by.
Karthik Tyagi has shown promise but has been out of the league for a few years now. Blessing Muzarabani, who replaced Mustafizur, is largely untested in the IPL. The same can be said about Akash Deep’s stand-in Saurabh Dubey. Green, who was bought to replace Russell, may not produce the same performance with the ball given that he has been cautiously managed by Australia of late.
In the spin department, Varun Chakravarthy’s form is a cause for concern after he ran out in spades in the second phase of the T20 World Cup 2026. Varun went at an economy rate of more than 9 in the tournament despite taking 14 wickets.
Narine has been a legend for KKR but is clearly at the end of his career. Also in the batting, the finishing department will miss Russell and Rinku and Ramandeep will have to shoulder the responsibility of providing big hits at the end. My guess is that Russell as a coach will have to step up in the clutch.
DOES KKR HAVE A PROBLEM WITH RAHANE?
While we usually discuss weaknesses in one section, this one deserves a separate section. For years, Rahane has been one of the pioneers of the IPL. His revival in 2023 was a dream come true as he played a major role in CSK’s run to the title.
But in 2025 with KKR, the captain seemed to be a bit of a problem in the batting order. The Mumbai batsman has always excelled in the powerplay as an opener or at No. 3. But once the on-field limitations come into play, Rahane tends to slow down.
Also, Raghuvanshi, who is considered to be the future of the franchise, is more of a finesse player like Rahane and having both in the middle order does not work in the current T20 environment.
Now, since they added Green to the mix, the Aussie batter excels right at the top, almost at the same places as Rahane. One of Allen and Seifert is expected to open, but if KKR want to use both men, then Rahane’s slot in the batting will decide where Green and Raghuvanshi line up in the middle. A case KKR would like to avoid.
Maybe, Rink’s promotion to Vice Captain it was taken in mind that if Rahane fails, he might be replaced. It’s never nice when the pundits call your captain the weak link in the team.
KKR FULL SQUAD 2026

Ajinkya Rahane, Akash Deep (replaced by Saurabh Dubey), Rahul Tripathi, Manish Pandey, Umran Malik, Anukul Roy, Sarthak Ranjan, Daksh Kamra, Prashant Solanki, Kartik Tyagi
KKR: 3 PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR
Angkrish Raghuvanshi: The Mumbai batsman is expected to have a breakout season and has started honing his skills as a keeper. His 103 off 55 balls in the first game inside the team showed that he has become more aggressive in his approach and under Abhishek Nayar, his childhood coach, Raghuvanshi could be one of the leading batsmen for KKR this season.
Finn Allen: Allen was part of RCB but never got a chance to play a game. Over the past year, the tall keeper has made a name for himself with his devastating bat and partnership with Seifert. He scored 466 runs in 11 matches in the last season of the Big Bash League and then carried the same form into the T20 World Cup 2026. Kolkata fans got a small taste of what to expect from Allen when he smashed South Africa with a blistering hundred during the World Cup semi-final at the Eden Gardens. If it gets going, the city of joy will be doing a lot of dancing.
Cameron Green: Living at a fat price is the toughest job in IPL. What makes it even more difficult will be Russell’s shoes to fill. Green will have to do both. After a short break, Green is back in the IPL and is looking to make the podium his own.
Green has shown flashes of the talent he had during his stints with MI and RCB and KKR will be hoping he does the same for them. If he can, then KKR will have great success in the tournament.
