Senior Congress leader K. Sudhakaran, MP, returned to Kannur early on Friday (March 20, 2026) after days of political uncertainty and signaled his acceptance of the party’s decision ahead of the Kerala assembly elections.
Mr. Sudhakaran, who had earlier taken a firm stance on poll participation, said his “priority now is to ensure the victory of the party and bring it to power”. His return comes after much speculation and internal deliberations within the party about the candidacy.
A warm welcome
Hundreds of party workers gathered at the Kannur airport in the early hours of the morning to receive him and waited throughout the night to give him a warm welcome. Despite the enthusiastic reception, Mr. Sudhakaran refused to speak to the media, citing fatigue upon arrival. The development is expected to ease intra-party tensions in the district after days of visible dissent and uncertainty over the allocation of seats.
Meanwhile, TO Mohanan, who has been nominated as Congress candidate in Kannur constituency, is set to start his campaign.
Those close to him said he will meet prominent leaders today (Friday), including Mr. Sudhakaran, to give him “blessings and support” in the evening before he begins his campaign.
