Mahadevi Meti, daughter of former minister late Hullappa Y. Meti, has announced that she will contest the Bagalkot bypolls as an independent candidate.
The Election Commission of India has now announced a by-election to the seat in view of the death of HY Meti a few months ago.
The vote is scheduled for April 9.
The former MLA’s three children, Mahadevi Meti, Mallikarjun Meti and Umesh Meti, have declared themselves as aspirants for the seat.
The internal dispute in the family was well publicized and discussed at various levels.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently announced in Bagalkot that a member of the Meti family will get the party ticket.
Mahadevi Meti issued a statement in Bagalkot on Monday that she will file her nomination papers in Bagalkot on March 20 as an independent candidate.
It follows reports that the Congress may choose Mallikarjun Meti as its candidate.
Her followers posted posters on social media on Monday saying her father’s popularity would help her win the seat.
