Kylian Mbappe braces for World Cup exit as France crush Sweden in Round of 32

Kylian Mbappe has been part of the World Cup for a long time. On Tuesday night in New York, New Jersey added another chapter to an already remarkable legacy.

The France captain struck twice in a commanding 3-0 win over Sweden to send Les Bleus through to the last 16, extending his record for most goals scored in World Cup knockout matches. His brace also took him to 18 goals in World Cup history, one shy of Lionel Messi, while matching the Argentine on six goals in this year’s Golden Boot race. Mbappe currently leads the standings thanks to two assists.

Bradley Barcola added France’s second goal as Didier Deschamps’ men underlined their status as tournament favorites to book a meeting with Paraguay in Philadelphia on July 4.

KNOCK THE KING

The World Cup has consistently brought out the best in Mbappe, but the knockout rounds have become his real domain.

Sweden set out to frustrate France and the 27-year-old again found the breakthrough when it mattered most. After a patient first-half display in which Les Bleus repeatedly threatened without reward, Mbappe finally unlocked the contest moments before half-time.

Mbappe won the ball in the penalty area after neat work between Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele from a short corner, moved the ball onto his right foot with famous speed and produced an unstoppable effort beyond Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.

Instead of soaking up the applause, Mbappe sprinted straight to Didier Deschamps and hugged his manager, who had only recently returned to the France camp after attending his mother’s funeral. Soon the entire French team surrounded their coach, offering a poignant reminder of the togetherness that has become one of the team’s defining characteristics.

FRANCE FIND ANOTHER TRANSFER

Sweden survived long enough to stay in the contest before half-time, but any hopes of a comeback disappeared almost immediately after the restart.

Michael Olise, who quietly controlled most of France’s attacking play, split the Swedish defense with a perfectly balanced ball that released Bradley Barcola. The Paris Saint-Germain winger made no mistake, finishing superbly to double France’s lead and score his second goal of the tournament.

This time it was Mbappe who pounced on the midfielder’s powerful pass before producing another level finish beyond the advancing keeper. It was a familiar sight. The captain calmly celebrated after scoring his ninth World Cup knockout goal, a record that continues to underline his extraordinary influence whenever football’s biggest tournament reaches its decisive stage.

With the result secured, Deschamps withdrew his captain to a standing ovation as France comfortably wrapped up another convincing win.

A LEADER ON A MISSION

Mbappe’s numbers continue to dominate the headlines, but his influence on this France side extends far beyond the goals.

The captain, who still bears the scars of a dramatic 2022 World Cup final defeat to Argentina, has repeatedly insisted individual accolades mean little without another winner’s medal. Throughout the tournament, he spoke of unity, publicly supporting teammates in difficult moments and embracing his role as the leader of a team chasing a third straight World Cup final.

Deschamps believes his captain has become much more than France’s top goalscorer.

Kylian knows how to defend himself. He also scores goals, more than anyone else,” the France coach said after the match.

“I’ve told you since day one that he’s on a mission. He’s embraced his role as captain. The image people may have of him from the outside rarely reflects who he really is.”

Mbappe echoed that sentiment when explaining the emotional celebration with his coach.

“That’s the DNA of this group,” he said. Kylian Mbappe is on a mission for his second World Cup crown. (Image: Reuters)

“We’re all in this together the coach has been through something which unfortunately everyone experiences at some point in their lives. It’s incredibly difficult. He will never be alone with us. We will support him.”

Asked if his focus had already shifted to Paraguay, Mbappe smiled.

“Right now I’m focusing on air conditioning and the dressing room.

ANOTHER PARAGUAY

France have now won all four of their games at the tournament, scoring 13 goals while conceding just twice, and appear to be gaining momentum at exactly the right time.

Their next challenge is against Paraguay, who stunned four-time champions Germany on penalties to book their place in the round of 16.

For Mbappe, meanwhile, another knockout draw means another opportunity to add to a record that already stands alone. He is now one goal away from Messi’s overall World Cup tally, while the race for the Golden Boot remains well underway.

If France are to reach a third straight World Cup final, history suggests there is no player they’d rather be leading when the knockout rounds begin.
