International Women’s Day was celebrated at the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru on Tuesday, where scientists, staff and students came together to recognize the achievements and contributions of women in science and society.
Deepa P., Director, Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute, Mysuru was the chief guest at the event, while Parameshwara CM, CEO and Founder, Smiles Hospital, Bengaluru was the guest of honour. The event was presided over by Giridhar Parvatam, Director, CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysuru.
Dr. In her speech, Deepa emphasized the importance of empowering women through education, skill development and opportunities in research and innovation. Emphasizing the strength and resilience of women, she noted that “calmness is strength” and noted that women’s inner strength enables them to make significant contributions in their professional careers while managing domestic responsibilities.
She also said that “the rhythm of the home is the rhythm of the nation”, stressing that the harmony, motivation and dedication of women in families play a vital role in the progress and development of the nation.
On this occasion Dr. Parameshwara emphasized the importance of health and well-being among women. He emphasized the need for regular medical care, psychological well-being and maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
A surgical gastroenterologist noted that empowering women also includes ensuring their physical and emotional health. He expressed concern over the prevalence of female feticide in India and called for greater awareness and social responsibility.
He also advised caution when consuming antibiotics, noting that antibiotic resistance in women is becoming a growing problem in the country.
During a discussion on food and nutrition, he introduced the concept of ‘KYC – Know Your Consumption’, which encourages individuals to be mindful of their dietary choices. Based on his medical experience, he also shared insights about the gut health of Indians and expressed concern about the growing “supplement-driven economy” where people increasingly rely on supplements instead of getting their nutrients from natural foods.
Dr. In his presidential remarks, Giridhar Parvatam appreciated the invaluable contribution of women scientists and staff of CFTRI. He noted that the institute actively supports research into natural preparations rich in minerals and vitamins aimed at improving the health of women at various stages of life. He also highlighted the achievements of several successful women entrepreneurs in the food sector who have benefited from food technology innovations and training initiatives.
