Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President K. Selvaperunthagai on Tuesday said the BJP has to absorb the hike in domestic and commercial bottle prices of Rs. 60 and Rs. 114.50 and demanded that AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi to roll back the price hike.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said that there was no need for Opposition Leader Mr. Palaniswami to criticize the BJP, but he blamed him for not even approaching the Prime Minister to make the appeal.
“The All India LPG Distributors Association has written a letter saying that those with one cylinder should reserve after 21 days and those with 2 cylinders should reserve gas cylinders only after 30 days … and it takes us back to the time when people used wood stoves,” he said. He added, “Let the government provide subsidy on the gas cylinder… let the Center absorb the price hike.”
When asked why the DMK could not do its part, Mr. Selvaperunthagai hoped that the state government was thinking about it, even though price hike was the Union government’s purview.
Mr. Selvaperunthagai also said that Congress Rajya Sabha member Christopher Manickam alias Christopher Tilak was an “ordinary worker” of the party and thanked the DMK for allocating the Rajya Sabha seat to the Congress.
