University Students’ Union Polls at University of Calicut August 7
University of Calicut (CU) University Students’ Union elections will be held on August 7. The results will be announced on the same day.
An order by the Dean, Students’ Welfare, on Tuesday (June 30) said Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran had given sanction to issue a notification for the July 8 elections. The provisional list of voters will be published on the same day. The final list of voters will be published on July 16. The last date for submitting nominations is July 25. The final list of nominations will be published on July 28.
Meanwhile, the VC has decided to appoint a committee of senior university teachers to study and report on remedial steps to be taken to improve the conduct of union elections as envisaged in the Lyngdoh Committee report. This follows the university’s election grievance cell finding irregularities in the course of the college union elections in the previous academic year. The matter would also be brought before the Syndicate to decide what action should be taken against college officials who “violated the electoral process” and “caused serious problems in the universities”.
The VC had earlier directed the dean of student welfare to get reports from all colleges on whether ballot papers with serial numbers were used during union elections. However, many colleges did not submit the required reports within the stipulated time. The complaints cell also found that most of the colleges that conducted the elections used ballot papers without serial numbers, which is against the provisions of the election regulations.
Although elections held in all these colleges can be declared void and a fresh vote should normally be ordered, it is no longer practical to do so as the academic year has already ended. It was therefore decided to hold university union elections excluding members of university union councils elected from universities where the election process had been declared illegal by the complaints cell.
