Special Chief Secretary (Energy) K. Vijayanand has directed AP power companies to be fully prepared to ensure uninterrupted and reliable power supply to all consumers in the state in view of the onset of summer and an expected increase in power demand to around 280 million units (MU) per day in May.
During a virtual review meeting with senior officials of power companies on Monday, Mr. Vijayanand instructed DISCOMs to closely monitor demand trends, maximize available generation and make advance arrangements for power supply to ensure quality power supply 24×7.
He said that Andhra Pradesh (AP) power companies have so far met the average grid demand of 264.65 MU per day, registering an increase of 9.15% compared to the corresponding period last year. The state grid also recorded an all-time high consumption of 274.60 MU since the bifurcation on March 7, 2026.
Mr. Vijayanand noted that the state witnessed a sudden surge in electricity demand during the last ten days of February, which necessitated additional purchases from power exchanges to maintain uninterrupted supply.
It said the peak demand during March and April 2026 was expected to reach 14,500 MW, while the minimum demand was expected to be around 9,000 MW. Smaller deficits of around 200 to 400 MW were expected during the early morning hours.
He emphasized the need for continuous monitoring of availability of thermal and renewable generation and efficient procurement of power from exchanges like Day Ahead Market and Real Time Market to ensure uninterrupted supply across the state.
AP Transco Director (Grid) AKV Bhaskar, CMD DISCOMs L. Siva Sankar, I. Prudhvi Tej and P. Pulla Reddy were present among others.
