Many believed the move may have been designed to counter a specific bowling threat or change the balance between the left and right sides at the top of the order. However, India head coach Gautam Gambhir clarified that the decision had a much simpler rationale.Samson was left out for a few matches before being brought back into the side, but Gambhir explained that the call was not affected by opposition tackles or the presence of a spinner at one end. Instead, the management wanted to add even more attacking intent to an already strong batting line-up.“The reason to get Sanju was not about driving the off-spinner from the other end. It was about whether we can get even more firepower at the top and can we be more aggressive in the first six overs and we know what Sanju can do,” Gambhir said during an interaction with Jatin Sapru on Star Sports India.According to Gambhir, the recall was a proactive decision aimed at strengthening India’s ability to dominate the power play rather than a response to specific tactical concerns.“There was never any doubt about his talent, there was never any doubt about his explosiveness, that when he gets going he can win you the game in the first six overs as well and imagine you have Abhishek, Sanju and Ishan as your top three and then you have the likes of Surya, Hardik, Tilak and Shivam and Axar. So you can’t ask for anything more,” he added. His comments also offered an insight into the wider batting approach the team management wants to pursue. According to Gambhir, Samson is not just a situational pick but someone capable of significantly strengthening the batting order designed to attack from the start and maintain pressure throughout the innings. He also dismissed suggestions that India were too concerned about having more left-handers at the top of the order.“So the reason yes, a lot of people will debate that we wanted to crack those three left-handers up top, not at all because I still believe quality batting is going to be good against any pitcher, any pitcher, whether it’s a spinner or a lefty.”For Gambhir, the focus remains on skill and intent rather than the theoretical downsides of matching each other. The Indian coach also shared how informally the news of Samson’s inclusion was delivered. “I told him in the gym. We actually both practiced together and I told him you’re going to play tomorrow and he said come on. Those are normal conversations we have.”Gambhir explained that the team environment is deliberately kept relaxed, with short meetings and one-on-one conversations instead of lengthy tactical meetings. In this context, Samson’s return reflected both India’s desire for more batting aggression and a dressing-room atmosphere that encourages players to express themselves freely.
