A class 10 student died after a fire, possibly caused by an electrical leakage, broke out while he was sleeping in his thatched hut at Uranambedu village near Minjur in Tiruvallur district.
The victim, 15-year-old Srinivasan, was the son of daily laborers Munusamy and Muniyamma of Uranambedu village near Minjur. The couple also has a daughter.
On Sunday, the couple went to a relative’s house along with their daughter while Srinivasan stayed at home. After playing a kabaddi match in the evening, he returned home and slept. His grandmother was in the house with him at night.
Early on Monday morning, the grandmother woke up and was doing housework when the thatched hut suddenly caught fire and the flames spread rapidly. Srinivasan, who was sleeping inside the house, was trapped in the fire.
Neighbors, hearing his cries for help, rushed to the spot and tried to put out the flames by pouring water on them. Members of the Fire and Rescue Service also arrived at the scene and brought the fire under control. However, the hut collapsed during the fire and fell on the boy. He suffered severe burns and died on the spot.
After receiving the information, the police rushed to the spot, collected the body and sent it to Ponneri Government Hospital for post-mortem.
