Trump visit to India expected next year, Sergio Gor says, rules out trip during US midterm elections | Today’s news

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has said that US President Donald Trump’s official visit to India should take place next year and not during the US election season.

“Mid-semester is not the time. It has to be sometime next year… We would like to do it sooner rather than later,” the diplomat was quoted as saying by ANI.

PM Modi to visit US in December for G20: Gor

Earlier on May 23, Gor said that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on behalf of President Donald Trump, formally invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the White House in the near future. The invitation was extended during Rubio’s visit to India from May 23 to 26.

Gor also mentioned that Washington would “like” Prime Minister Modi to visit the United States again. “Secretary Marco Rubio invited Prime Minister Modi when he visited… We’re glad to have him here. And I know he’s coming to the G20 in December,” Gor said.

The 2026 G20 Leaders Summit is scheduled to be held in Miami, Florida on December 14-15, marking the first time since 2009 that the United States will host the summit.

US-India Trade Agreement Update

On the edge of IX. of the USISPF 2026 leadership summit, Gor also expressed confidence that the proposed India-US interim trade deal would be finalized “sooner rather than later”.

He added that Trump remains actively engaged in strengthening India-US bilateral relations and emphasized the need to institutionalize regular Quad meetings at the ministerial level.

Talking about the proposed interim trade deal between India and the US, Gor said discussions were progressing well despite the complexity of the deal, which includes thousands of provisions and requires extensive legal review.

He said the deal was in its final stages, with most of the work already completed, adding that only a few issues remained on both sides and that only the final “1 percent of the deal” remained to be concluded, according to PTI.

“Ambassador Greer has the full confidence of the president, so we’re getting close to finalizing it. But these things are complex legal matters and this is not one page. We have thousands of items between our two nations that we’re working on. And so the fact that we’ve come this far is a great sign for the relationship, and I hope that we can wrap it up sooner, according to ANI,” he told ANI.

Gore further expressed confidence in the strength of India-US ties, saying the bilateral relationship continues to be driven by the close personal relationship between Trump and Prime Minister Modi.

“People are asking, ‘Why is it taking so long? We’ve been at it for a year and a half. To put that in perspective, the European trade deal took 20 years. So regardless, as long as we beat the European deal, I think we’re in good shape. But I’m determined to see it through,'” he mentioned.

He also highlighted the ambitious goal set by Trump and Prime Minister Modi to increase bilateral trade between the two countries to $500 billion.

“What President Trump and Prime Minister Modi have announced as a bilateral trade target of $500 billion over the next few years is a staggering number that is unprecedented. We are ready to do so much with India. India exports far more to the United States than anywhere else,” Gor said.
