
A 48-year-old man, N. Ajay Kumar, who met with an accident recently and was declared a stroke while being treated at Manipal Hospital on Wednesday, gave a new lease of life to four patients after his family agreed to donate their organs.
According to a hospital press release, Ajay Kumar met with an accident on February 23 while alighting from a bus near Gunadala bus stand. Ajay Kumar, who sustained a head injury, was immediately rushed to a local hospital. When there was no improvement in his condition, he was shifted to Manipal Hospital in a critical condition on February 24.
Despite the best possible medical efforts and constant monitoring, his neurological condition deteriorated, according to the press release. After all ordered clinical and neurological tests were performed, the patient was declared brain dead on Wednesday evening.
In an act of compassion, the family agreed to organ donation, in which the donor’s liver and one kidney were transplanted to patients at Manipal Hospital in Vijayawada, while the other kidney was sent to Kamineni Hospital in the city and the corneas were sent to LV Prasad Eye Hospital.
The organ harvesting was done as per established medical and legal protocols under the supervision of Andhra Pradesh Chairman Jeevan Dhan K. Rambabu and Hospital Director J. Ramnjaneya Reddy, hospital authorities said.
