Students protest against indiscriminate fee hike in KSLU

Highlighting the need for remedial measures to address various issues affecting students at the Karnataka State Law University (KSLU), many students protested at the university’s Hubballi campus recently.

In a protest organized under the aegis of Akhila Bharat Vidyarthi Parishath (ABVP), the protesters questioned what they called indiscriminate hike in various fees levied by the university.

Addressing the protesters, ABVP Central Executive Committee member Sachin Kulageri said that the KSLU had increased the fee structure from ₹3,700 to ₹8,580 during 2025, against which the students had approached the Karnataka High Court.

“The Supreme Court ruled that the 129% increase in fee is illegal and ordered refund of the additional amount collected from the students. However, the university appealed against the order, which is highly condemnable. KSLU should follow the court order and reduce the fee,” he demanded.

Mr. Sachin said that similarly, the university has increased the revaluation fee from ₹260 in 2023 to ₹368 in 2026, an increase of 31%, while UGC guidelines allow a 15% hike every three years.

He also demanded that all law graduates be allowed to attend the annual convocation and withdrew the order that only graduates who passed with first class grades could attend convocation.

He said the university should only collect postage from graduates who want to receive a summons in absentia.

Responding to their plea, KSLU Vice-Chancellor C. Basavaraju told them that he would call a meeting of officials and student leaders to discuss and resolve the issues.

ABVB leaders Venkatesh Dange, Abhishek Doddamani, Sanat Totiger, Manikanth Desai and others led the protest.
