Will El Niño rain on the Indian monsoon this year? | Today’s news

Recently, scientists have argued that the relationship between El Niño and the Indian monsoon has strengthened again since 2000. However, this connection remains complex and unpredictable. For example, 1997 saw one of the strongest El Niño events on record, but the Indian monsoon remained surprisingly normal. Conversely, 2009 was not an El Niño year, but India suffered a devastating 18% rainfall deficit. For this year, the IMD predicts that El Niño conditions will strengthen, potentially weakening the monsoon and triggering cascading effects on rural livelihoods, consumption, food security and economic growth.
