Fatherless student fails to pay fee, Telangana HC senior counsels come to her rescue

Two senior lawyers of the Telangana High Court have come to the rescue of an engineering student who was not allowed to appear for her end-semester exams because she could not pay her school fees.

A third-year student of MVSR Engineering College, Nadergul, knocked on the door of the HC seeking direction to the college and Osmania University officials to allow her to attend the exams. She paid her fees till the fifth semester. Following the death of her father on May 12 last year, the student’s family faced financial difficulties and could not pay the fees for the next semester. She represented the college to grant her relief from paying the fee in view of her plight.

However, on June 22, her name was deleted from the college registration portal. This made it impossible for the student to submit the exam form and remit the fee. She was not allowed to attend the first exam on Wednesday. The student immediately filed a request for a preliminary injunction. The student, who appeared in person before Justice Juvvadi Sridevi on Wednesday, explained that the total fee owed was ₹60,000 and she was ready to pay ₹20,000.

She asked the court to allow her to appear for the exam considering her family’s situation. At this stage, two senior advocates L. Ravi Chander and S. Sriram came forward to pay the remaining amount of dues by the end of the day. Given the student’s financial difficulties, her educational interests, and assurances from senior advisers that she would pay the fee, the court said this required an interim arrangement to ensure the student’s academic career was not jeopardized.

The judge directed the college and university officials to immediately restore the student’s name on the exam registration portal, allow her to submit the exam form along with the fee and allow her to appear for the subsequent final exam at the end of the semester.
