Intelligence agencies have issued a security alert for Delhi and Uttarakhand following a possible Khalistani terror threat, with key religious sites, government institutions and police facilities under heightened surveillance, sources said on Saturday (27 June 2026).
According to sources in the intelligence establishment, the alert was triggered after an email appeared warning of possible attacks in the coming days.
The threat comes against the backdrop of a dispute between a group of Nihangs and the authorities at Nagrasu gurdwara in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. The Nihangs demanded the release of four of their members arrested in connection with the June 16 clash with locals at the Karnaprayag market.
The stalemate ended after three days on 23 June following the intervention of a Sikh delegation.
Later, on the night of June 25, a group of Nihang Sikhs forcibly entered Uttarakhand through the Kulhal border in Dehradun district, which borders Himachal Pradesh, and demanded the release of the arrested men. The officials managed to convince them to return to Paonta Sahib.
The email reportedly mentioned several temples in Delhi and Uttarakhand, along with government offices, railway stations and police installations as potential targets.
The threat message also allegedly referred to certain political leaders, raising concerns among security agencies, they said.
Following the alert, Delhi Police, Uttarakhand Police and Central Intelligence agencies have stepped up vigilance and have started reviewing security measures at sensitive and high-traffic areas as a precautionary measure.
Officials said deployments were increased at key religious sites, transport hubs and government buildings, while local police units were ordered to remain alert and intensify patrolling.
Sources said the Delhi Police has launched an investigation into the email to ascertain its authenticity and trace its origin. Cyber experts examine the digital footprint of the message to determine whether the threat is credible or a scam.
No concrete information has yet emerged on the timing or exact location of the possible attack, officials said, adding that precautionary measures were being taken given the severity of the alert.
