Private bus operators express concern over free travel for women on KSRTC

Private bus operators have expressed concern over the potential impact on their business due to the state government’s new scheme for free travel for women in Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses.

The Kerala State Private Bus Operators’ Federation warned at a press conference on Wednesday that private buses may stop plying altogether, affecting the livelihood of thousands of owners and workers.

Women make up almost 60% of private bus passengers. If women commuters switch to KSRTC buses, the revenue of private bus operators could be halved, federation officials said.

Private buses outnumbered KSRTC buses almost three times. While private bus operators had to bear heavy taxes, permit fees and penalties even though they contributed a good share of transport tax revenue, KSRTC continued to operate despite mounting losses due to government support. Rising fuel prices exacerbated the crisis. Despite the increase in fares, the current situation has made it difficult to continue services.

The federation has called the government for a hearing by June 15 and urged it to study the plight of private bus operators and take necessary measures to protect the sector.
