Concerns about moving to shorten the working days of government offices

February 8, 2026

In connection with the government’s intention to reduce the number of working days of the authorities to five a week, there have been concerns. There is concern that this decision would make it more difficult for the public to access government services.

Janata Dal National District Leader KU Irshad called the move irrational. He warned that this could cause public resentment at a time when people were already forced to visit the authorities repeatedly even for minor matters.

He said that in institutions like village offices, panchayats, taluk offices and collectors, people often have to wait for days to complete procedures related to certificates, land records, welfare applications and pension processing.

The situation in the courts is also worrying, he said, pointing to a large backlog of cases, including many that have been pending in consumer and family courts for years.

“When procedures cannot be completed on time even with six working days in a week, reducing working days will only put people in more trouble,” said Mr. Irshad.

He noted that despite widespread adoption of digital services, problems such as delays in file movement, unnecessary procedural complexities and unequal access to services persist.

Any move to shorten working days would send the wrong signal to the company, he said. “Instead, the priority should be to improve the quality and efficiency of public services,” he said. Mr. Irshad demanded that the government reconsider its decision.
