The Israeli government said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was expected to meet Trump in Washington on Wednesday to discuss negotiations with Iran.
Wednesday’s meeting will be the sixth between the two leaders since Trump took office a year ago.
Netanyahu “believes that any negotiations must include limiting ballistic missiles and ending support for the Iranian axis,” his office said in a statement on Saturday, referring to Iran’s allies in the region.
However, Iran said the discussions were strictly limited to its nuclear program.
US President Donald Trump also confirmed that Washington and Tehran will hold further talks after the initial talks in Oman, which he described as “very good”.
“Very good” interviews
Iran and the US held talks in Oman on Friday, and Trump later said talks would resume early next week.
The talks, held on Friday in the Gulf Arab state of Oman, marked the first round of talks between the two sides since the US and Israel struck Iran last summer.
Delegations from both countries participated in indirect negotiations mediated by Oman.
“Iran looks like it wants to make a deal very badly. We have to see what it is,” Trump told reporters on Friday.
He said aboard Air Force One that the next round of talks would take place “early next week,” although Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi later said no date had yet been set.
Despite calling the talks productive, Trump said Friday that a “large fleet” was heading toward Iran and would arrive soon, CNN reported.
Interviews were strictly limited
Iran has reiterated that it will not agree to a complete halt to uranium enrichment, CNN reported.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Al Jazeera that there were no talks on ballistic missiles or regional proxies.
“We are ready to reach an agreement that will guarantee them that enrichment in Iran will be peaceful,” Araghchi said, stressing that Tehran would not accept a complete halt to enrichment.
According to the report, both sides have agreed in principle to continue negotiations after consultation with the respective capitals.
Araghchi and US envoy Steve Witkoff took part in the meeting, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner also attended.
While the talks were formally indirect, Araghchi told Al Jazeera that he had direct contact with the US delegation and that the two sides shook hands. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi acted as mediator.
What do Iran and the US want?
In exchange for the lifting of US sanctions, Iran has offered to accept monitoring and controls to ensure its nuclear program is not weaponised.
Washington and its allies rejected Iran’s insistence on continued enrichment, seeing it as a potential path to developing nuclear weapons.
