USA won the toss and opted to field on a dew-filled evening at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, which also hosted a star-studded opening ceremony.

Samson made way for the in-form Ishan Kishan, who enters the T20 World Cup on the back of his maiden T20I hundred, scored against New Zealand in Thiruvananthapuram last week.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj, who was drafted in as a replacement for the injured Harshit Rana, was started immediately. The Gujarat Titans fast bowler came in for Bumrah.

BCCI confirmed Bumrah’s absence in a statement on Saturday evening: “Jasprit Bumrah was not available for selection for the opening T20 World Cup match against USA due to illness. The BCCI medical team is monitoring his condition closely.”
