The first ever men’s and women’s hundreds auctions are done and dusted with the focus on Pakistan players. Before the auction, it was announced that teams with IPL links would not bid for any Pakistani players, causing a massive uproar among fans and pundits. Eventually, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stepped in and ensured that such a thing did not happen and players were selected on merit.
The Women’s Hundred auction took place on March 11 at Piccadilly Lights in central London, where Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine became joint-highest signings after both were picked for £210,000.
India’s Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh have been picked up for £27,500 and £50,000 respectively by Sunrisers Leeds and Manchester Super Giants.
In the men’s auction, young Sussex all-rounder James Coles fetched the top opening-round fee, with London Spirit splashing out £390,000 to bring the 21-year-old into their squad. The Welsh Fire have invested heavily in their batting, signing England star Joe Root for £240,000 and last season’s MVP Jordan Cox for £300,000, committing more than half of their overall budget to the pair.
Elsewhere, Southern Brave snapped up England’s leading white-ball player Adil Rashid for £250,000. James Vince moved to MI London for £190,000 while Jonny Bairstow was secured by London Spirit for £160,000 as their first new addition to the auction.
The highlight of the day saw Abrar Ahmed selected by Sunrisers Leeds, marking the first time a team with IPL links has bid for a Pakistani player since the shadow ban came into force. This sparked a lot of chatter on social mediawith Sunrisers Leeds even suspended their X account.
Abrar was picked up for £190,000. Usman Tariq, who will wear the jersey of Birmingham Phoenix, also found a buyer in the tournament. They bought it for £140,000. There were only two Pakistani players in the women’s auction in the form of Fatima Sana and Sadia Iqbal, but both remained unsold.
With that in mind, here’s a look at all the players sold during both auctions.
