Dear Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav, don’t let Ishan Kishan down
After the game, Kishan did not shy away from the opening debate and admitted his excitement about the role. “I was really excited for Wednesday. I wanted to open the innings,” he said, underscoring his growing confidence after a string of strong performances leading into the World Cup.While making his intentions clear, Kishan stressed that team balance remains his priority. “Batting at number three I enjoyed the situation, but with the World Cup coming up, no matter what position I’m batting in, I’m always focused on doing my best for the team. I think it’s about staying present, watching the ball and playing the shots that are required at the time. I don’t put too much thought or effort into it,” he explained.

Should Ishan Kishan open the innings for India in the T20 World Cup?
His approach was reflected in the fearless manner of his batting and he launched into South Africa’s attack right from the start. “I just react, watch the ball and play accordingly and it seems to work well for me. Some days you feel really good, some days you don’t. On this particular day I also have to praise the pitch, it was amazing to bat, even in the second innings. I believed in the wicket and the bounce,” Kishan added.India captain Suryakumar Yadav has already hinted at a new direction in the toss, confirming Kishan and Abhishek as the opening pair – a move that appeared to move Sanju Samson further down the pecking order. “Definitely Ishan and Abhishek,” Suryakumar said, hinting at the mindset of the team management as India experimented ahead of the event at home.He revealed that Kishan’s thinking was shaped by the urgency of the World Cup year. “With the World Cup so close, it’s important to think that if the ball is there, even if the fielder is there, you back off and go for it,” he said, echoing the attacking philosophy India wants from its top order.Apart from his own performance, Kishan also highlighted the importance of Tilak Varma’s return from injury, describing him as a key multi-dimensional asset. “He’s very important for us. He’s not just a batsman anymore, he gives us a couple of overs, especially when two left-handers are batting. He’s a very good fielder and the way he’s batting today, you need someone at number three who can turn the strike and keep things moving,” he said.Meanwhile, the Indian bowlers took nine different chances to restrict South Africa to 210 for seven, with Abhishek Sharma contributing two wickets. Kishan felt that the bowling unit performed in the tough conditions but admitted that improvements were still needed. “There’s always room for improvement. We’ll talk about areas where we can bowl and how we can plan better. But on this wicket I think we did a pretty good job… Overall it was a solid bowling effort, although we’ll sit down and discuss how we can improve further,” he said.
