Marcus Rashford dropped a major hint about his future after producing a title-winning performance against arch-rivals Real Madrid at Camp Nou. The England international, who is currently on loan at Barcelona from Premier League giants Manchester United, has been instrumental in the club’s successful La Liga title defense this season.
The 28-year-old winger shone in the ninth minute of El Clasico when he curled in a superb free-kick to assist. Barcelona beat Real Madrid 2-0. The victory sealed the Catalan club’s 29th La Liga crown with three games remaining in the campaign.
After the game, Rashford admitted that lifting the title with Barcelona was the dream finish to an unforgettable season.
“It’s the perfect way I want it to end,” Rashford told ESPN. “I’m very happy and I just want to enjoy today. I’m living in the moment. At the end of the season we’ll see what happens. I came here to win and we did it, so I’m very happy. It’s an incredible feeling.”
Rashford has repeatedly spoken positively about life in Spain and has consistently hinted that he would like to stay at Barcelona beyond the end of the current campaign. The striker enjoyed a remarkable debut season in Catalonia, registering 28 goal contributions in all competitions and quickly becoming a fan favorite under head coach Hansi Flick.
WHAT DOES RASHFORD WANT?
Asked in the mixed zone whether he expected to still be a Barcelona player at the start of next season, Rashford again suggested he would welcome a permanent move to the Spanish champions.
“I don’t know,” said Rashford. “I’m not a magician, but if it was up to me, I’d stay. We’ll see what happens. I came here to win and I want to win as many trophies as possible.”
Rashford joined Barcelona on loan last summer after spending the second half of the previous season at Aston Villa. Despite making over 400 appearances for his boyhood club Manchester United, the England star has gradually fallen down the pecking order under former United boss Ruben Amorim.
However, reports from England suggest that Michael Carrick, currently serving as interim manager of Manchester United after returning the club to the Champions League, could try to convince Rashford to return to Old Trafford. if appointed permanently.
Yet Rashford has made his intentions increasingly clear throughout the season, with the winger looking to secure a long-term future at Barcelona. Head coach Hans Flick is also believed to be keen for the club to complete a permanent move following the Englishman’s spell during their title campaign.
