US-Iran War News Live: Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced on Saturday that they had launched attacks on US military sites in the Persian Gulf region in retaliation for recent US airstrikes on Iranian territory, state television said.
The US military earlier said it carried out strikes against targets inside Iran after it blamed Tehran for a drone attack on a commercial vessel passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The US is attacking Iran
The United States launched military strikes against Iran on Friday after accusing Tehran of a drone attack on a cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. Both countries claimed the other had violated a ceasefire agreement reached last week.
According to US Central Command, the operation targeted Iran’s missile and drone storage sites as well as coastal radar facilities, and a US official confirmed the mission was over. Iran said the projectile hit an area near a pier in Sirik in southern Iran and said its naval forces retaliated against US military positions in the region, according to Reuters.
Tehran also said it would maintain control of the Strait of Hormuz and warned Gulf countries against supporting Washington after Thursday’s attack on a cargo ship near the Omani coast. US President Donald Trump blamed the incident on Iran, calling it a violation of the ceasefire reached last week.
In a statement announcing the strikes, the U.S. Central Command said: “The unwarranted aggression against merchant shipping by Iranian forces is a clear violation of the ceasefire. It described a ‘strong response to yesterday’s attack on a commercial ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz.’
“Unauthorized aggression by Iranian forces against merchant shipping clearly violated the ceasefire,” CENTCOM noted.
agreement between Israel and Lebanon
Meanwhile, there were signs of diplomatic progress as Israel and Lebanon signed an agreement aimed at ending hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. The agreement outlines the disarmament of Hezbollah and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon as initial steps, although its implementation remains uncertain as Hezbollah has said it will not comply.
