‘Unfortunately not’: Shreyas Iyer confirms Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for India debut

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (PTI Photo) NEW DELHI: The wait for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s historic debut for India will continue after newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed that the 15-year-old batting sensation has not been included in the playing eleven for the opening T20I against Ireland in Belfast on Friday.Sooryavanshi was widely tipped to make his first international appearance after a stunning rise in the charts. If he turns up, the teenager would become the youngest ever player to represent India in men’s international cricket, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s 37-year-old record. However, at the draw, Iyer put an end to speculation before explaining that the decision was driven by team balance rather than the youngster’s readiness.“We are going on the field first. It’s a new surface for us, first time in Belfast. Considering the conditions, the environment and the goal, you want to be the first to go on. You need to get used to the conditions as quickly as possible. We will play one game at a time. Always repeat that you don’t need to complicate things,” said Iyer.Asked if Sooryavanshi will make his debut, the skipper said, “Unfortunately not.”He then assured fans that the teenager remains firmly in India’s plans.“She (Sooryavanshi) will get her chance when the time comes. For now, we are going with three true seamstresses, one all-rounder,” Iyer added.

The teen prodigy remains on the brink of history

Despite losing his first cap, Sooryavanshi remains on the verge of rewriting Indian cricket history. Whenever he makes his international debut, the left-hander will become India’s youngest international cricketer in men’s history, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, who was 16 years and 205 days when he made his debut against Pakistan in 1989.The Bihar youngster earned his first call-up to the senior team after a sensational IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals, where he finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 776 runs in 16 innings at a breathtaking strike rate of 237.30. He also smashed a record 72 sixes, the most by any batsman in a single IPL season. The teenager carried that form into India A’s tri-series in Sri Lanka, smashing 94 off just 29 balls in the final against Sri Lanka A, an innings that included the fastest fifty in the history of List A cricket, reaching the milestone in just 11 deliveries.

A dream deferred, not denied

When Sooryavanshi received his first call-up to India, he described donning the India jersey as fulfilling a lifelong dream.“Words cannot explain it. The reason I picked up the bat and went to the ground to practice from day one: this dream is now fulfilled. The biggest step in this journey has been completed today,” he said in a BCCI video.“I felt like I was in a dream when I saw that shirt. I couldn’t stop smiling. Sometimes things happen that you never imagined could happen.”While Indian fans will have to wait a little longer to see the teenage sensation on the international stage, Iyer’s comments made it clear that the omission is only temporary.
