The Kerala Government Medical Association (KGMOA) has termed as baseless the reports of a patient being denied treatment at Vilapil Community Health Centre, where he was admitted after breathing problems.
In a statement on Tuesday, KGMOA said the patient’s death was distressing, but claims of treatment failure were untrue.
According to the statement, the main gate of the polyclinic was kept open at all times and the grill door leading inside the polyclinic building was closed as per security instructions.
Within minutes of the patient, P. Bismeer from Kollamkonam, reaching the hospital and making the call, the doctor on duty examined him and started emergency treatment.
After Bismeer’s examination, an ambulance was arranged without delay and he was referred to Government Medical College Hospital for advanced care, the statement said.
The statement added that CCTV footage clearly showed that the patient was given the best treatment available at the 24-hour health center despite the lack of human resources and the absence of the injured.
According to the statement, Bismeer was already under treatment for a heart condition. Two days before the incident, he reached the health center with the same difficulties and was treated there. He was also advised to consult a specialist immediately. However, this did not happen.
Allegations of denial of treatment in this context were an insult to the honest service of health professionals and misleading, the statement added.
KGMOA also condemned the January 24 incident where some political activists entered the health center and insulted and threatened doctors and staff on duty and disrupted the functioning of the facility.
It pointed out that the health center has only three permanent doctor positions and no permanent nursing staff. With the help of part-timers, continuous services were provided, including inpatient services. Attempts to demoralize staff and tarnish the reputation of the health center were not acceptable, the KGMOA district committee said, calling for strict action against those disrupting the functioning of the health facility.
