CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam on Thursday urged the state government to convene a tripartite meeting involving broiler chicken farmers, poultry companies and the animal husbandry department to ensure fair wages for farmers.
In a statement issued, he said that poultry farmers across the state have been demanding an increase in the cost of rearing and their ongoing struggle has led to an increase in chicken prices.
Mr Shanmugam said the last such meeting was held in September 2013, after which rearing costs were increased by 15% that year and another 5% in 2014. “The government should immediately hold a meeting to resolve the crisis,” he added.
