Youth wings of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) protested in the state capital and Thrissur on Thursday against the loss of Sabarimala gold, prompting police to use barricades, water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesters. In Thiruvananthapuram, Youth Congress activists marched to a rally demanding action against the alleged misappropriation of gold from the Ayyappa temple. Activists have raised slogans against the state government over the gold case and recent controversial remarks by Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian. On January 18, Cherian said that while the RSS supports majority communalism, the Indian Union Muslim League, a key ally of the Congress, supports minority communalism. A protest was held in Thrissur by BJP’s Yuva Morcha activists who raised the issue of Sabarimala. They marched to the District Collector’s office and tried to remove or scale the barricades.
